Project Background

In automotive transmission manufacturing, Low-grade tapered hub D18H7 Precision holes are critical functional components that not only demand dimensional stability but also require extremely high surface roughness. Although solid carbide reamers have long been commonly used in such applications, with the continuous rise in tungsten prices, issues such as persistently high tool costs, relatively short tool life, and difficulties in compensation have become increasingly prominent.

The customer’s original process uses Solid carbide reamer (coated, internal coolant) , the processing parameters are: S300 / F90 Three major pain points have been exposed in actual mass production:

  • Low efficiency Insufficient feed rate, slow machining cycle.

  • Roughness instability: Ra often hovers around 0.8, with significant fluctuations.

  • Short lifespan: The average lifespan of solid carbide reamers is only about 80 pieces, leading to frequent replacements and persistently high costs.
